With more than 40 years of professional photographic experience, Sharlene Phillips is an Australian photographer and founder of OneEyedFrog Photography®, based in Berwick, Victoria.

Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Sharlene's creative foundation extends beyond photography. From an early age, she developed a strong ability in drawing and traditional art, with her work receiving first prizes in art competitions. This early recognition of her artistic ability helped shape the visual approach she brings to photography today.

Her understanding of line, form, proportion, perspective, light, composition and visual balance was developed through both drawing and fine art before being applied to the photographic medium.

Equestrian and equine photography are a particular area of expertise.

With decades spent photographing horses, riders and competitions, Sharlene understands that successful equestrian photography requires far more than simply pointing a camera at the action. The Craft Behind the Image

Photography is not simply about having the latest camera or the most advanced technology. At its heart, it is about understanding the craft.

Sharlene was fortunate to learn photography in an era before digital cameras, autofocus and instant previews. Every frame mattered. Film had to be loaded into the camera, exposures carefully considered and each photograph created without the ability to immediately check the result.

Her photographic education continued in the darkroom, where negatives were developed by hand and images were carefully produced beneath the safelight. Working with enlargers, photographic chemicals and different papers taught her how light, exposure, timing and technique could transform the final image.

That experience developed patience, precision and an understanding of photography that continues to influence her work today.

It taught her to read light, anticipate movement and compose an image before pressing the shutter.

Modern cameras are extraordinary tools and technology has created remarkable opportunities for photographers. But technology is only part of the process. The photographer's experience, observation and understanding determine how those tools are used.

This is particularly important in equestrian photography.

Every discipline has its own rhythm, technical requirements and defining moments. Understanding when a horse is about to move, when a rider's position is at its strongest or when a fleeting interaction between horse and rider tells the greater story comes from experience, observation and years spent around horses and competition.

A Passion for Animals & Nature

The name OneEyedFrog has a very personal story.

Sharlene has a longstanding passion for frogs, animals and Australian wildlife. Frogs have been part of her life for many years and inspired the distinctive name behind her photography business.

She keeps and breeds frogs under a private advanced wildlife licence, reflecting a genuine interest in their care, behaviour and the natural environment.

That love of animals naturally extends into her photography, particularly her work with horses, pets and wildlife.

Whether photographing a competition horse, a family companion or Australian wildlife, Sharlene approaches every subject with patience, observation and respect.
